I had a great weekend and I am "finally" settled in my new place. On Friday, I made the short trek to South Bend to catch Wilco, and they didn't disappoint as usual. On Saturday, I had a really great meal in Chinatown at a restaurant called Hing Kee. Yesterday, I went down to Wicker Park fest and checked out Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey. I hadn't seen them before, but it's safe to say the next time they are in Chicago I will be there. I hope everyone had a great weekend!

Looks like I might be changing my posts around here at Scents & Subtle Sounds, so stay tuned. I had a really good weekend and got to relax a bit. I did make it to Goose Island to try the Sai-Shan-Tea, but wasn't really impressed. They really need to get Fleur back in stock! I am really looking forward to this Friday as I will be heading to South Bend, IN after work to catch Wilco play their last Midwest performance of the year. I hope everyone had a great Monday!

I am definitely ready for the weekend. I haven't decided, but I might make it over to Lincoln Hall tonight for the Langhorne Slim show. It's a scorcher here in Chicago today, but I think it's supposed to cool off over the weekend. I will also probably make it over to Goose Island to try the the Sai-Shan-Tea. I am posting this much later than I normally do, but it was one hell of a day. I am definitely getting ready for the holiday weekend. I don't have much more to stay. I can't say that I am a Slipknot fan, but there is something about the song "Before I Forget" that I like. Check out a live version below.

Slipknot - Before I Forget

Led Zeppelin to Replace U2 at Glastonbury?

Just hours after U2 canceled their appearance at Glastonbury, Michael Eavis might and I stress might have a really big replacement. Jimmy Page has stirred the pot by saying that he wouldn't rule out Led Zeppelin replacing U2 at next months festival. Stay tuned for more on this. I would say this is highly unlikely, but you never know.

U2 Cancels North America Tour, Glastonbury Appearance

If you bought a ticket to see U2 and their flying saucer this summer, you are going to have to wait until 2011. Today, the Irish rockers announced that they are canceling their upcoming North American tour and Glastonbury appearance as Bono recovers from emergency back surgery. I had a really good weekend and am looking forward to the Memorial Day holiday. I had the floors refinished in my new place on Saturday. It's only the first round of work, but I hope to be moved in by the second week of June. Yesterday, I attended my first ever Goose Island MBA reunion. Great beer & great food! U2, Muse & Stevie Wonder To Headline Glastonbury

Perhaps the mother of all music festivals have confirmed their headliners for this year. Michael Eavis, founder of Glastonbury has confirmed that U2, Muse & Stevie Wonder will headline the 2010 Glastonbury Festival. Last year the festival sold out with 137,500 tickets being sold. This year the tickets sold out in less than 24 hours!! Folks, this fest is the real deal!

Finally, props to Sirius XM Radio for their coverage of Phish's Festival 8. Their feed was unbelievably clear and except for them cutting out "Driver" during the acoustic set, I would say it was a huge success. I would have preferred to be at the festival, but at the same time, sipping on a cold beer and listening to the shows from the comfort of my couch was pretty awesome. I will have a full recap of the weekend coming in the next few days.

Another World Tour For U2

U2 has announced their second world tour in support of the lackluster No Line On The Horizon. Bono and company's space ship will land at Angel Stadium in Anaheim, CA on June 10, and the tour will conclude in Coimbra, Portugal in early October. No word on any additional dates. The band will wrap up their current tomorrow in Vancouver, BC, and will finally break even after 44 shows! Now the band can pad their pocket books. The tour dates are below.

Finally, Atlanta based metal heads Mastodon are staying busy. The band spent a good chunk of the summer touring Europe supporting Metallica. They are currently in the midst of a large US tour, which has shows booked until the end of November. After a very short break the band will head to Australia & New Zealand for the Big Day Out Festival. The band has recently scored the music for the film adaptation of the comic book Jonah Hex. Bassist Troy Sanders talked to Paste about the project.

News From The Analog........

Finally, in the midst of their larger than life world tour, U2 has yet to make a penny after playing 32 shows. Paul McGuinness, the bands manager said they will not make it into the black until the conclusion of their North American tour, which ends at the end of October. It was also revealed that the overhead for each show is an astounding $750,000.

Review: U2 Shines at Solider Field

Music has always served as my escape from the every day hustle and bustle of life. The economic crisis that has gripped this country has affected the way that people live and has inevitably changed the way that people spend their money. To most people, concert tickets would be on top of the list of items to cut out of their budget. It seems as if U2 serves as the exception to the rule.

When the house lights cut out on Sunday night at Chicago’s Soldier Field the crowd erupted. You could tell the audience was ready for any and everything the band had in store for them. U2 could have easily rolled out their greatest hits and pleased the crowd, but they held back and played a career-spanning set.

The band wasted no time in introducing their new material. The first four songs of set included Breathe, No Line on the Horizon, Get on Your Boots and Magnificent off their latest release No Line On The Horizon. The album has been meet with mixed reviews, but that hasn’t deterred the band from playing the material live. If anything, a lot of U2’s material translates much better live than on their records. Sunday’s show was no exception.

Bono gave props to local heroes Wilco by singing the line “kiss and ride on the cta” from Far Far Away before launching into Beautiful Day. It was a subtle shout out, but none the less Bono recognized that even though U2 can sell out Soldier Field, Chicago is still Wilco’s town.

It is well publicized that U2 has - for lack of a better word - a ridiculous stage for their 360º World Tour. It takes over 100 trailers to bring it from city to city and takes 48 hours to dismantle and load out. The carbon foot print that U2 is leaving would make even Big Foot blush. It is estimated their carbon footprint for this tour will exceed 65,000 tons. That is the equivalent of flying an airliner to Mars! The band is working on plans to offset their environmental disaster, but the plans won’t be announced until after the tour concludes.

The massive stage played a big role in I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For, which served as one of the high points of the night. There were goosebumps aplenty as 60,000+ sang the chorus. This was one of those moments where you say to yourself, “that was awesome!” Before the song, Bono joked that the stage was the “latest in a long line of U2 accessories” referring to their Zoo TV Tour & Popmart Tour, which also featured elaborate stage designs. It was very fitting as Bono was poking fun at his own band’s enjoyment for putting on a true stadium rock show.

Despite the overwhelming size of the stage U2 fit the space surprisingly well. City of Blinding Lights saw the giant screen light up Solider Field. Four spot lights on top of the stage shot into space. The Edge, whose guitar playing is not very flashy, sounded great. His unique sound has defined U2’s sound from the beginning. While not playing one guitar solo the whole evening, The Edge used his myriad of effect pedals to shape the sonic landscape. The rhythm section of drummer Larry Mullen Jr. and bass player Adam Clayton kept perfect time, content to let their band mates shine.

The band ran through classics like Vertigo and Sunday Bloody Sunday before closing their set with a tremendous version of Walk On.

For two hours on Sunday night U2 took their fans on a voyage that many will never forget. Despite the hard economic times the band was able to fill the stadium both nights, which is impressive to say the least. While it may not have been the best concert it was certainly memorable, not only for the production of the show but for the sheer passion the band performs with. After all these years U2 has shown themselves to be the rare ultra-successful band that continues to deliver on all levels.

In case you didn’t read the forecast for Chicago this past Sunday, it was certainly a beautiful day.

U2 starts their North American tour next weekend in Chicago. They posted a video on their website of their crew taking apart their massive stage! I am not sure massive is the correct word to use, nonetheless it is very impressive. I will be at their second show at Solider Field show and can't wait to check out what the band has in store!
