Monday Morning Coffee Break

I still don't have internet at my new place, so that is the cause of the lack of posts. I have pretty much settled into my new place (except the internet part) and am really enjoying it. I had a fantastic meal at Nightwood on Saturday and definitely recommend it. Goose Island on Clybourn has some great beers in tap including a collaboration with Paul Kahan of Publican. Here is some news and a video to get your Monday moving!

Monday Morning Coffee Break

I hope everyone had a great weekend! I am pretty much finished moving and am starting to get settled. I still don't have internet in my new place, so that's a lot of the reason while I haven't been posting much of anything. I hope to have that problem remedied this week. In the meantime, I look forward to more posts as my blog is approaching it's first birthday! Grab a cup of coffee and check out some news and a video to jump start your Monday.

Monday Morning Coffee Break

I had a pretty chill weekend, but managed to catch MGMT at The Riv this weekend. I enjoyed the show, but the owners of the Riv need to find a way to cool that place down. It was hot as shit! I must say that the crowd was really annoying. They stood for the older stuff and sat for the new material for the most part. I love it that they played "Siberian Breaks", the 12 minute opus from Congratulations. You can check out the reviews from the Chicago Tribune & Sun Times. Anyways.... less than one week until I hit the road for my Phish road trip! First stop, Merriweather Post Pavilion on Sunday! Here's some news and a video to get your Monday moving.

Monday Morning Coffee Break

I had a really good weekend and am looking forward to the Memorial Day holiday. I had the floors refinished in my new place on Saturday. It's only the first round of work, but I hope to be moved in by the second week of June. Yesterday, I attended my first ever Goose Island MBA reunion. Great beer & great food! In case you missed it, the Blackhawks are headed to the Stanley Cup Finals! Here is some news and a video to get your Monday moving!

Monday Morning Coffee Break

Happy Opening Day! I am cautiously optimistic for my White Sox this season, but it's a long season so we will see. I had a pretty chill weekend, but I did get out and try a new beer on Friday night. The beer engine at Map Room had Thornbridge Brewery's Jaipur IPA pouring. Unfortunately, they ran out, but I enjoyed the the one glass that I had. Don't forget that they announce the Lollapalooza lineup tomorrow. Here is some news and a video to get your Monday moving.

Monday Morning Coffee Break

It's going to be a long week, but by the end of the week, I will know what Phish shows I will be going to this summer. I was able to get two tickets to the now sold-out MGMT show at The Riviera Theatre on June 18. I tried a Burton Bridge Old Expensive Ale, which is currently on the beer engine at Map Room. I hope everyone had a great weekend. Here is some news and a video of the Foo Fighters national television debut back in 1995 to get your Monday moving.

Monday Morning Coffee Break

Winter tried to make a comeback in Chicago this weekend, but thankfully it didn't last long. I ran the Shamrock Shuffle on Sunday and did much better than I thought I would. In case you missed it, MGMT is streaming Congratulations on their website. You should really check it out! Here is some news and a video to get your Monday moving.

Monday Morning Coffee Break

I had a really good time at the Jeff Tweedy show on Saturday night. It's always a treat to see him perform solo on an acoustic guitar. It also helps when he plays some Bob Dylan, Radiohead and of course Wilco. Don't forget to set your DVR's tonight for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony. Tune into Fuse TV at 8:30 pm ET for all the festivities. Here is some news and a video to get your Monday going.

I did a little CD shopping this weekend for the first time in a while. I picked up Neil Young's Harvest & Neil Young. I also bought Mumford & Sons Sigh No More, Mastodon's Call of the Mastodon & Emotionalism by The Avett Brothers. On Friday, I tried the new Bracket Buster IPA at Goose Island and man was it good!

Monday Morning Coffee Break

I tried Ethiopian food for the first time at Ras Dashen and reallyenjoyed it. I tried a beer from Namibia at dinner called Windhoek Special This made me think of the Flight of the Conchords song "Ladies of the World".But this weekend is going to kick some serious ass! I am catching Trey at The Riv on Friday and then I head to Madison on Saturday to catch Wilco at Overture Hall. Here is some news to get your Monday moving. Last year it took two months for the three-days passes to sell out for Pitchfork Music Festival. Thanks to three solid headliners including the much anticipated set by Pavement, this year took less than a week. You are still able to purchase one day passes, but they will go fast. Check out these videos by the three headliners.

Monday Morning Coffee Break

The Bad Plus show on Friday night was sick! It had been awhile since I had seen them, but they put on a clinic. On Sunday, I watched Didier Drogba beat Arsenal himself. After that I was up in Evanston to see Northwestern take care of Indiana. I enjoyed the Super Bowl, but thought the commercials were pretty lame for the most part. The worst being the Doritos commercial with the guy in the coffin that falls out. Dumb. Paste runs down ten great Pepsi ads from past Super Bowls. Here is some news to help kick start your Monday.
I remember when I listened to "I Can't Quit You Baby" from Led Zeppelin's Coda for the first time and was blown away by Jimmy Page's guitar solo. Check out this great video of the song.

Monday Morning Coffee Break

I had a great weekend, but it sucks that it's Monday. On Saturday, I made my first trip to Three Floyds Brewing Company in lovely Munster, IN. I tried a beer called Ham on Rye and yes, it tasted like a ham sandwich. I will add that I did enjoy the beer. I also had an incredible meal at Belly Shack on Sunday! We tried the Belly Dog, Roasted Squash, Boricua & the Korean BBQ Kogi. It sounds like a lot of food, but we didn't leave stuffed. Here is some news to kick start your Monday.
If you haven't heard Rose Hill Drive you should definitely check them out. Guitarist Daniel Sproul can absolutely shred on the guitar. Check out this video below of Rose Hill Drive covering Band of Gypsy's "Machine Gun".

We can all agree that NBC royally screwed Conan, but he definitely got the last laugh. After an emotional speech, Conan closed out the show with a great version of Lynard Skynard's "Freebird" with a little help from his friends. Conan's super group was anchored by Will Ferrel, Beck, Ben Harper, Billy Gibbons and the Max Weinberg 7. Conan strapped on a silver and black Les Paul and showed some guitar chops of his own.

I listened to this song before I left for work today from Phish's first show in Albany this past November. Enjoy!

Monday Morning Coffee Break

I had a rather busy weekend. On Saturday, I witnessed a rare Bulls win and celebrated it with a Poperings Hommelbier at Map Room. Yesterday, I watched the Ravens take care of the Patriots and ice skated at Millennium Park. Here is some news to jump start your Monday.
One of my favorite bands is Great Lake Swimmers. I discovered them shortly after they released their third album Ongiara, which is an amazing record. The band recently released Lost Channels to critical acclaim and has toured extensively. You can check out my review of their recent show at Lincoln Hall in Chicago. The band is currently wrapping up a brief tour of China. Tony Dekker has been blogging about his experience for Spinner. Check out his blog entries here.

Monday Morning Coffee Break

I had a great trip to St. Louis except for the fact that we had to take a flight back because our train broke down before even getting to St. Louis.
It didn't take long for Chris Cornell to make news in 2010. At the stroke of midnight, Cornell tweeted that Soundgarden is back! Matt Cameron, who is Soundgarden's drummer currently drums for Pearl Jam. Pearl Jam is scheduled to headline the NOLA Jazz & Heritage Festival and has some summer European shows line up. It will be interesting to see if Pearl Jam keeps Cameron as their drummer. Superunknown is one of my favorite albums from the 90's and I can't wait to see these guys live. There is no word on an album or tour dates, but check out Soundgardenworld.com for updates.

Unfortunately, I am not in Miami this year for Phish's NYE run, but there will be plenty of coverage to keep fans who didn't make it in the know. Make sure to check out yours truly, Hidden Track, Live Music Blog, Mr. Miner & YEM Blog among others for updates and reviews. The Miami Herald recently ran a story about the upcoming Phish shows. You can read the story here. Don't forget to check out Hoodstream.com for a live feed from all four Phish shows.
