Lollapalooza 2010 & The Letter O

The letter O appears to be the favorite letter for the organizers of this years Lollapalooza. Today, the lineup graphic was posted, but only the letter O is shown. The lineup won't be announced until April 6, but this will give fans one week to make their best guesses. All signs point that the recently reunited Soundgarden will bring this years Lollapalooza to a close. Tickets are on sale now via Lollapalooza's website.

Today is the day that Phish fans hear their fate on summer tour tickets, myself included. I am hoping for the best, but we will see. I might check out High on Fire this Friday at Lincoln Hall, but I am not sure of my plans for the weekend. Scents & Subtle Sounds is now on Facebook. You can become a fan here. Here is some news and a great video of an early Robert Randolph & the Family Band performance.

Phish to Perform on 'Late Night With Jimmy Fallon'

On May 13, Phish will perform on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon as part of his week long tribute to The Rolling Stones masterpiece Exile on Main Street. No word on what song Phish will play, but I am hoping that they play "Rip This Joint". Check out this video below of "Tumbling Dice" from Festival 8.

Video: Mumford & Sons - White Blank Page (Bookshop Sessions)

Mumford & Sons debut album, Sigh No More can't seem to find it's way out of my CD player. I can't tell you how many times that I have listened to it, but the songs still give me goose bumps. It has quickly become my favorite release this year. Their sold-out May 24 show at Lincoln Hall couldn't come soon enough.

Monday Morning Coffee Break

It's going to be a long week, but by the end of the week, I will know what Phish shows I will be going to this summer. I was able to get two tickets to the now sold-out MGMT show at The Riviera Theatre on June 18. I tried a Burton Bridge Old Expensive Ale, which is currently on the beer engine at Map Room. I hope everyone had a great weekend. Here is some news and a video of the Foo Fighters national television debut back in 1995 to get your Monday moving.

Thank Boosh It's Friday!

I've been thinking about running a Friday news segment for a while, but couldn't think of a name that I liked until last night. I was introduced to The Mighty Boosh by my friends in Walter Meego a few years ago and thought it was hilarious. The off the wall British comedy was recently released in the US on DVD. I definitely recommend checking it out.

You have until 11:59pm ET tonight to
request your Phish summer tour tickets. Thanks to everyone who has read my blog. It's hard to believe, but it's been roughly seven months since I started S&SS. I have some ideas on expanding, so stay tuned. If you have any suggestions, just drop me a line. Don't forget that you can follow me on Twitter. Without further adieu, I bring you Thank Boosh It's Friday!

Them Crooked Vultures Announce Tour Dates

Rather than announce a massive tour, Them Crooked Vultures appear to be piecing together their tour schedule at their own pace. The latest round of shows finds the band playing five shows in Canada and two shows in the US. The May 18 show at the Aragon Ballroom in Chicago marks the bands first appearance in the Windy City since they made their live debut on August 9, 2009.

The first time I saw Dave Grohl play drums was at the Foo Fighters first show in Chicago at Metro in 1995. I was blown away then and plan on being blow away at the Aragon this May! You can check out the tour dates below.

Phish Announces Largest Summer Tour Since 1993

Phish fans have a big reason to celebrate. Yesterday, Phish announced their largest summer tour in 17 years! The tour will visit Phish summer staples like Deer Creek, Alpine, SPAC, Great Woods, Meadows Music Theater& Merriweather Post Pavilion.

But there are also a few stops that that Phish will be revisiting or playing for the first time. Those stops include Blossom Music Center, Hershey Park Stadium, nTelos Pavilion & CMAC Performing Arts Center.

Phish will also return to two cities in which they haven't played since the early 90's. The band will return to the Greek Theatre in Berkeley, CA for the first time since 1993. After three nights at the Greek, they will make their way to the secluded town of Tulluride, CO for two shows at Telluride Town Park. The last time Phish played Telluride was 1991.

Will there be a West Coast run in the fall? The lack of shows at the Gorge, Shoreline and West Coast in general make it a strong possibility. Perhaps a return to Indio for Halloween? We will have to wait and see, but it's going to be a great summer for Phish fans!

A limited number of tickets are available directly through Phish Tickets' online ticketing system at http://phish.portals.musictoday.com/. The ticketing request period is currently underway and will end Friday, March 26th at 11:59pm Eastern Time.

Tickets go on sale to the public beginning Friday, April 2nd at 10am ET, followed by more public onsales on Saturday, April 3rd. For complete ticketing info (and there's lots of it), please visit www.phish.com.

Setlist: Phish @ Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony 3/15/10

The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony kicked off with Phish giving tribute to prog rockers Genesis. The broadcast kicked off with Phish performing "Watcher of the Skies" from Foxtrot. After a solid performance, Trey took to the podium to induct one of his favorite bands. Trey was visibly nervous, but you could tell that he was very excited. Phish finished their tribute with a version of "No Reply at All" from Abacab. It will be interesting to see if either one of these songs makes it into the rotation this summer. It would certainly be welcomed.

I picked up Valleys of Neptune, which is the new Jimi Hendrix album that was released yesterday. The album sounds great and I am hoping we can get a new live Hendrix album in the near future. It makes me excited for the Experience Hendrix show in Chicago in a few weeks! I also picked up High on Fire's Snakes for the Divine, which just rocks! Here is some news to help you get through your Wednesday.

Butch Vig To Produce "Heaviest" Foo Fighters Record Yet

Dave Grohl is turning the clock back to 1991. Grohl has revealed that Butch Vig will produce the Foo Fighters next record. Vig produced Nirvana's insanely popular Nevermind and unless you lived in a cave in the early 90's, you have probably heard of it. And if that isn't cool enough, Grohl wants to record it in his garage. Badass!

Great Lake Swimmers News

It's been a while since I've written anything about Great Lake Swimmers. I thought I would take the time to let you know whats going on with one of my favorite Canadian bands.
  • The band has been nominated for Juno award in the Roots & Traditional Album of the Year: Group. For a full list of nominees, click here.

  • On March 17, Great Lake Swimmers will be playing a special free concert at The Underground (41 Catharine St. North) in Hamilton, and shooting a live video for their song "The Chorus In The Underground." Two sets of music by the band and the filming of this song by acclaimed director Scott Cudmore will be part of the evening's festivities. Bring your friends and have some fun with the Great Lake Swimmers - you could possibly be featured in the video!

Entry is guaranteed at the door only, on the night of the show, on a first come, first served basis. A cash bar will be available inside. Doors open at 9pm. Show starts at 10pm sharp!

Radiohead's Ed O'Brien To BBC Trust: Don't Shut Down 6 Music

The BBC recently announced that it plans on shutting down BBC 6 Music. 6 Music is a digital radio station that offers an alternative to the more radio friendly music that BBC Radio 1 & Radio 2 offer. Below is a letter that Radiohead's Ed O'Brien sent to the BBC Trust.

Mark Thompson, Herr Director General of the BBC, announced yesterday that 6 music was to be closed ... which is obviously a ludicrous decision for those who actually love hearing great music on the radio ... so I've written to the BBC Trust, who apparently have the ability to reverse the decision, and if you feel this way inclined the link is https://consultations.external.bbc.co.uk/departments/bbc/bbc-strategy-review/consultation/consult_view
Here's what I wrote:

To whom it may concern,

I am writing regarding the news today that 6 Music is going to be closed, in the hope that you reconsider this decision. To be honest I, along with a vast number of other musicians, music industry types and real music fans, are completely shocked and baffled by this news. I wonder if those who made this decision are actually aware of the hugely important role that 6 music plays in fostering and promoting new bands, as well as still playing the likes of the band that I am in. It literally is the radio lifeblood for music outside of the mainstream. Not to denigrate Radio's 1 and 2, but it really is the only station that puts music first, and that's from a punters point of view and not some bloke in a band. Nowhere else can you hear an archived session track from T Rex juxtaposed next to Midlake's latest release. As David Bowie, put it ... it keeps the spirit of John Peel alive.

Please realise the impact and severity of closing this station down. It will be a huge blow for new bands and their labels. It's not enough to 'refocus' Radio's 1 and 2 as 6 music does a very specific thing. What you have with 6 Music is a gem of a radio station, it is doing what no other station in the world does or can possibly do. Remember it is also still relatively young, give it time. You also finally have a fantastic and seemingly settled line up of DJ's. Please get behind it and from what I can gather about its annual budget of £6m, it surely punches way above its weight in terms of cultural relevance and importance.

Thank you for considering this.

Ed O'Brien (Radiohead)
