Your Late Local News

I had a great weekend and I am "finally" settled in my new place. On Friday, I made the short trek to South Bend to catch Wilco, and they didn't disappoint as usual. On Saturday, I had a really great meal in Chinatown at a restaurant called Hing Kee. Yesterday, I went down to Wicker Park fest and checked out Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey. I hadn't seen them before, but it's safe to say the next time they are in Chicago I will be there. I hope everyone had a great weekend!

Wilco @ Coveleski Field, South Bend, IN 7-30-10

Last night, Wilco made their final Midwest appearance of the year at Coveleski Field in South Bend, IN. The show, which wasn't very crowded carried a very chill vibe and it felt like Wilco was playing someone's backyard. Jeff Tweedy was particularly chatty and touched a number of subjects including the futility of the Cubs, Glenn Kotche's broken toe, Kings of Leon, and his admittance of him trying zumba. The boys will curate their inaugural Solid Sound Festival in August before heading to Europe in the fall. Wilco will begin recording their new record in October. Thanks to my friends Jessica & Michael for making last nights show a blast! You can check out the setlist below.

Hump Day Happenings

It's been another busy week for me, but I am looking forward to my weekend, which should be uneventful. The next show I will be seeing is Wilco at Coveleski Field in South Bend, IN, but that's not until July 30. Tickets are still available and if you live within reasonable driving distance, I would recommend hitting up their last Midwest show of the year.

Wilco Leaves Nonesuch..... Wilco (The Label) On Tap?

It appears that Wilco is joining the growing number of bands/musicians who are either starting their own label or finding new ways to release new music. I am really excited to hear what Jeff Tweedy and company has up their sleeves. Stay tuned!
In an interview with D.C. website Express Night Out, Wilco guitarist Nels Cline mentioned that Wilco’s new album would be on their own record label. “I don’t know the name of it,” Cline told Express Night Out. “Jeff was basically not wanting to be on a record label for a while—he didn’t renew his contract with Nonesuch—so we’re striking out on our own, our own label. There might be a 7-inch or something, a little souvenir when we do this Mass MoCA [Solid Sound Festival in North Adams, Ma.] I’m not sure, really. Basically, Jeff and [Wilco manager] Tony Margherita are the masterminds, so I’m just cruising with what they want to do.”

Wilco Sponsors Little League Teams

The members of Wilco are not known for their athletic prowess, although drummer Glenn Kotche and guitar wiz Nels Cline each get substantial workouts during Wilco shows. The band is sponsoring little league teams in their hometown of Chicago and in Northampton, MA. Check out the info below.
Wilco: The Baseball Team
Wilco's Jeffy Tweedy has referenced his physicality before in self-deprecating fashion (saying in “Kicking Television” that he’s “working on his abs”), but a news update on the group’s website indicates that the band is more likely to hitting groundballs than doing sit-ups. That’s because Wilco is sponsoring not one, but two little league baseball teams in Chicago and Northampton, Mass., respectively. The Chicago team, the Royals, plays in the Warren Park Youth Baseball League, while the Mass. team is in the Northampton Little League, Junior Division. This seems like a natural place to make a joke about whether the teams will shift lineups as much as Wilco has, but who would do such a thing?

Monday Morning Coffee Break

Now that I have closed on my place, I hope to get back to more regular posts on my blog. All in all it was a pretty chill weekend for me. Yesterday, I grabbed some afternoon drinks with friends at Map Room. Last nights Trey webcast was really really awesome and was the perfect way to cap my weekend off. I thought their cover of The Band's "It Makes No Difference" was spot on! I also thought Trey's guitar playing was great. Summer tour is right around the corner! Here is some news and a video to get your Monday moving! Don't forget that S&SS is on Facebook & Twitter.

Wilco Brings Solid Sound Festival to North Adams, MA

Wilco have announced their very own music & arts festival set to take this place this summer in North Adams, MA. The festival will take place from August 13 -15. Tickets are available now and props to the band for keeping it very affordable. I wish I could make it, but I will be enjoying Phish at Alpine Valley that weekend.

Where's the love for Chicago?

The SOLID SOUND FESTIVAL is a new festival curated by the Chicago band Wilco. It debuts August 13 – 15 at MASS MoCA (Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art) in North Adams, MA. The SOLID SOUND FESTIVAL is an independently promoted and ticketed three-day event of music, art, comedy, interactivity and more. Wilco headlines the weekend, in the bandʼs only East Coast performance of the summer. This new festival also presents individual performances by all the Wilco membersʼ side projects including Glenn Kotcheʼs On Fillmore, The Nels Cline Singers, The Autumn Defense featuring John Stirratt and Pat Sansone and Mikael Jorgensenʼs Pronto.

SOLID SOUND FESTIVAL at MASS MoCA also plays host to additional musical performances, a fully programmed comedy stage, interactive installations and exhibits (including the Solid Sound Stompbox Station, an interactive guitar pedal exhibit created and demonstrated by Wilco guitarist Nels Cline, a concert-poster screening demonstration, planned workshops by luthiers and more), plus film, video installations and djʼs. Festival attendees will have full access to the entire MASS MoCA campus, which incorporates 150,000 square feet of galleries. MASS MoCA, a renovated 19th century textile mill, is the largest center for contemporary visual and performing arts in the U.S. Art on display in the galleries during the festival includes the Sol LeWitt Retrospective (chosen #1 exhibition of the year by Time magazine); Inigo Manglano Ovalleʼs Gravity is a Force to be Reckoned with; a major exhibition of work by Petah Coyne; Material World: Sculpture to Environment; Leonard Nimoyʼs Secret Selves; and a new installation by Michael Oatman.

Tickets for SOLID SOUND FESTIVAL are on sale this Friday, April 9 through the bandʼs official website wilcoworld.net and through solidsoundfestival.com. From April 9 to May 31 tickets for the three-day event will be available for $86.50 (including all fees and parking) and after June 1 for $99.50 (including all fees and parking).
