Setlist: Phish @ Times Union Center

I just got back to my hotel room and tonight was a tale of two sets. I enjoyed parts of the first set, but the second set is where it was at! "Golden Age" was definitely a surprise, but the jam was very cool. Not sure if that will stick around in the rotation, but I wouldn't mind hearing it again. I am exhausted and need some sleep. I will have a review of both shows when I get back to Chicago early next week.

Setlists: Phish @ US Bank Arena

I made the trip to Cincinnati on Saturday to catch Phish's second and final show at U.S. Bank Arena. The show featured some great jamming with the band clearly enjoying themselves on stage. Highlights for me included a very funky "Wolfman's Brother", a mind splitting "Split Open & Melt", and a fantastic version of "Rock and Roll", which segued into "Ghost"

For me though, the best part of the night was the middle of the first set. It was a real treat to hear "Torn and Frayed", "Ginseng Sullivan" and "Albuquerque". This is getting me very excited for this weekend, when I will travel to Albany for both shows. I logged just over 600 miles in my car in a little over 24 hours, but it was worth every mile.

Pavement, Blakroc, Furthur and Them Crooked Vultures are all solid bets for me, but we will just have to be patient and see what the folks AC Entertainment and Superfly Productions have up their sleeve.

West Ham United To Sell Kate Perry Inspired Lingerie

Phish fans picture this. John Fishman is centerstage at SPAC singing "I Kissed a Girl" in Kate Perry inspired Lingerie. The thought actually makes me cringe. With that being said, Fishman can stick with his dress! While West Ham United sits at the bottom of the table in the English Premier League, the football club is offering up a some interesting apparel.

Earlier this month at the MTV Europe Awards, Perry appeared on stage wearing
skimpy outfit with two West Ham United logos. The club will now sell the outfit in their club stores with an initial run of only 50 outfits. Get them before they are gone!

NPR PRESENTS THEIR 50 MOST IMPORTANT RECORDS OF THE DECADE

NPR has put together a list of their 50 most important records of the decade. You can check out their choices here. It seems that some fans are not very happy with the list. Check out the comments at the bottom of the story.
Please read the paragraphs below before passing any judgment on their choices.

November 16, 2009 - It seemed like an impossible task, but that didn't stop us from trying. With the first decade of the new millennium coming to a close, we decided to compile a list of the 50 most important recordings of the past 10 years — a list that covers a wide range of styles and genres, with indelible songs and albums that challenge, inspire and captivate. These are the game-changers: records that signaled some sort of shift in the way music is made or sounds, or ones that were especially influential or historically significant.

Favorite records don't necessarily qualify. A lot of people, including nearly everyone at NPR Music, love Fleet Foxes' debut album, but was it one of the decade's most important? (You can tell us what you think in the comments section below.) The 50 recordings that appear here are listed alphabetically. We've included artists and bands from a number of musical worlds, from dubstep and hip-hop to Top 40 pop, classical, jazz, world, beardy folk, metal and hard rock. There's some country, too, but admittedly no grindcore or goa trance. (Again, you can tell us what you think in the comments section below.)

A lot of people, including All Songs Considered listeners, helped put this list together. As we culled through the nominees, tears were shed and arguments were had. But one thing we all agreed on: This was one of the best decades yet for music. We can't wait to hear what comes next.

Hump Day Happenings

Lastly, Aerosmith has been providing more drama than an episode of Gossip Girl. It appears that Aerosmith may have solved their issues for the time being. Steven Tyler made a surprise visit at a Joe Perry solo gig last night in New York City. Joe Perry also took to his Twitter page to dispel rumors of Aerosmith breaking up. It would have been a shame if the band would hired a new singer and continued under the Aerosmith name.

The Onion recently ran a great piece about the song "Smooth", which appeared on the album and featured Rob Thomas of Matchbox Twenty.

Power Outage: AC/DC Fans Strike Back

On October 28, 2008 AC/DC began their world tour in support of Black Ice. After 123 shows around the world, the band is still playing the same setlist. There is a group of very devoted AC/DC fans who are fed up and penned an open letter to the Aussie rockers asking them to change it up bit.

I really wonder if AC/DC has lost their desire to perform. The band has been around for over 30 years and has countless songs to choose from. Is it really that hard for the band to throw in a few different tunes? It appears that is the case. I hope for the fans sake that AC/DC listens and gives back to their hardcore fans.

It appears that the band isn't really getting along. I can't imagine the rest of the band finding a replacement for Steven Tyler. If they can't solve their issues

Anyone have any suggestions for a Steven Tyler replacement? Do I hear Chad Kroeger?

Levon Helm's Midnight Ramble

On February 2, 2008 I made my way to Woodstock, NY to attend my first Midnight Ramble at Levon Helm Studios. Aside from being a big fan of The Band, I was also really digging Levon Helm's Grammy Award winning Dirt Farmer.

Levon Helm Studios is located off the beaten path and is very easy to miss as it sits down a drive surrounded by trees. It was perhaps the most unique concert experience I have ever witnessed. It's not that often that you get to see a legend like Levon Helm perform in the comfort of his own home.

All shows are pot luck and fans are encouraged to bring all types of food. Tickets are $150, and while that seems a little steep, it is worth every penny. You never know who will stop by the studio. Past special guests have included Allen Toussaint, Robert Earl Keen, The Swell Season, Steve Earle, Elvis Costello, Donald Fagen, Medeski Martin & Wood, Chris Robinson, Emmylou Harris, Garth Hudson, Dr. John, Bruce Hornsby, Norah Jones and many more.

Nirvana Live at Reading

I know this sounds corny, but the reason I started playing guitar was because of Nirvana.

With that said, I have been thoroughly enjoying the latest Nirvana live release,
Live at Reading. The album was released in multiple formats including a CD/DVD combo. From the opening chords of "Breed", to the feedback laden destruction of "Territorial Pissings", the album gives fans a glimpse to the chaos that Nirvana brought to the stage every night.

The DVD is the real gem of this release. The bands 1992 Reading Festival performance is one the bands most celebrated. The set featured early versions of "Tourette's", "All Apologies", and "Dumb", which would wind up on their 1993 release
In Utero.

Nirvana may have only been around for seven years, but in those seven years, the band accomplished more than most bands do in a lifetime. If you are just getting into Nirvana or have been a long time fan, this is a must have release.
Live at Reading is a prime example of Nirvana kicking ass and taking names, which is what they did best.

Let's Keep Free Music In Chicago

Living in Chicago definitely has it's perks when it comes to live music. On any given night, you can see a show covering just about every genre of music.

Blues Fest, Jazz Fest, SummerDance, Music Without Borders, and Downtown Sound are all programs put on by the city that are FREE. It's hard to beat sitting in Grant Park on a nice June night listening to some of the best blues in the world.

Chicago is feeling the economical crunch and with that our free music programs are being threatened. The Chicago City Council is putting together it's budget for next year and the city's music, arts, and other cultural programs are facing budget cuts. Friends of Chicago Music have put together a petition online to support these wonderful programs. Click here to sign the petition.

Please help keep these wonderful programs free for everyone!

Derek Trucks Band Announces Hiatus

After 16 years of relentless touring, and a fantastic 2009 that featured the release of Already Free, and a World Tour that brought the band to more than a dozen countries on four continents, The Derek Trucks Band is taking a hiatus in 2010. There are still a number of dTb dates scheduled throughout November and December of 2009.

To commemorate a stellar year of dTb concerts, we are releasing a live CD in 2010 from one of the band’s shows from the Already Free Tour. We’ve been listening to the tapes and the band is getting excited about their first full-length live album since 2004’s Live At Georgia Theatre.

Finally, Dave Grohl thinks the release of the Foo Fighters Greatest Hits is a bit early in his estimation. The only reason it is being released is because of a contractual obligation with Song/BMG. It's hard to imagine that they have been around for 15 years!

Monday Morning Coffee Break

Finally, props to Sirius XM Radio for their coverage of Phish's Festival 8. Their feed was unbelievably clear and except for them cutting out "Driver" during the acoustic set, I would say it was a huge success. I would have preferred to be at the festival, but at the same time, sipping on a cold beer and listening to the shows from the comfort of my couch was pretty awesome. I will have a full recap of the weekend coming in the next few days.
